To illustrate the application of Data Collisions in analysing public sentiment, we examined Jarryd Hayne’s media profile for the two years up to August 2015 to determine the sentiment associated with his transition from Rugby League to the NFL.
Based on online news sources, we were quickly able to segment the network into articles associated with Rugby League (30%) and NFL (70%) and then examined the sentiment associated with both phases of his career based on the language these articles contain.
This news network demonstrates the language based connections between all the published articles. It shows that 86% of the articles related to Jarryd are either positive or neutral. 14% are classed as negative, with the overriding majority of these published during his days in rugby league, demonstrating how well his decision to change sports has been received.
